Highlights include the stunning Ta Xua “cloud ocean,” majestic Mu Cang Chai rice terraces, and the highland beauty of Y Ty. Perfect for those seeking scenic routes and cultural immersion, this tour showcases the very best of Vietnam’s northwest.
Start your journey from Hanoi, by riding down scenic Red River dikes, passing by bamboo groves, fruit orchards, and expansive rice fields. As we enter Pu Luong Nature Reserve, we’re greeted by a lush tropical rainforest stretching across limestone mountains. This is a paradise for nature lovers on our first day.

Today, we ride towards Bac Yen, home to the breathtaking Ta Xua Dinosaur Spine, known for its “cloud ocean” views at sunrise. The rugged route has challenging trails, but the mountain scenery and misty cloud layers make it worth every mile.
Estimated Distance: 170 km
We continue to the captivating Mu Cang Chai, where terraced rice fields cascade across the mountainsides. These fields are a national heritage site, and during the summer months, they’re a vibrant green. It’s one of the most scenic parts of our journey.
Estimated Distance: 210 km
Today, we approach the Fansipan Mountain range via Tram Ton Pass. Y Ty, situated 2000 meters above sea level, is enveloped in clouds and offers a unique view into the local customs of Vietnam’s indigenous people.
Estimated Distance: 210 km
Ride through the scenic Red River valley, where we reach the Lao Cai border region, offering views of China across the river. Passing through Sapa’s terraced valleys and mountain scenery, this day showcases some of the best landscapes Vietnam has to offer.
Estimated Distance: 110 km
We descend from Sapa, stopping in Lao Cai before heading to Vu Linh village by Thac Ba Lake. Known as Vietnam’s largest artificial lake, it’s an idyllic spot to unwind, take a boat trip, and visit the Dao ethnic community by the lake’s shore.
Estimated Distance: 200 km
On our final day, we ride southeast along Highway 2 through Phu Tho Province, where we pass historical sites and vibrant northern villages. Following the Red River’s course back to Hanoi, we cross the Black River Bridge and return by late afternoon.

How far in advance should I book a motorbike tour?
We recommend booking your motorbike tour as early as possible. Although there is no strict deadline for booking, our tours can fill up quickly due to high demand and limited availability of bikes and guides. Most travelers book their tours 3 to 6 months in advance to ensure availability. Booking early helps us arrange everything to provide you with the best possible experience.
Do I need an international license to drive a motorbike in Vietnam?
Yes, an international driving permit (IDP) along with your home country's driver's license is required to drive a motorbike legally in Vietnam, especially in areas like the Ha Giang Loop where enforcement is strict, and fines can be imposed for not having an IDP. In Southern and Central Vietnam, although an IDP is still legally required, enforcement may be more lenient, and it is possible to drive without encountering problems. However, it is always safer and more prudent to have an IDP to ensure compliance with local laws and for insurance purposes. Many travel insurance policies require a Vietnamese motorbike license for coverage, so it's crucial to check the specifics of your insurance plan before your trip.
What should I bring for the motorbike tour, and how will my bags be handled?
For your motorbike tour, it's essential to pack appropriately to ensure comfort and preparedness. You should bring:
Vietnam Motorbike Tours provides helmets and protection pads, but personal fit and comfort with your gear can enhance the experience. Regarding luggage, unnecessary bags or suitcases can be stored safely at our bike store or tight on the back of the bikes during the tour. For longer tours like the Ho Chi Minh trail or tours starting and ending in different locations, we offer a luggage transport service from the start to the end point at an affordable rate.
How is traffic in Vietnam, and what can I expect during the tour?
Traffic in Vietnam is often described by foreigners as "busy," "crazy," and "amazing," where motorbikes and scooters dominate the roads. There's a unique flow to it that might seem like there are no rules, but locals navigate it skillfully. During our Vietnam Motorbike Tours, you'll be guided by experienced local riders familiar with the traffic patterns and will provide safety tips for navigating the roads. To ensure your safety, we prefer less crowded routes and avoid major busy roads whenever possible.
